About RPG Quests

The role-playing game made one very good promise and has been keeping it for decades: you will be stronger later than you are now, and the getting stronger will be the fun part. Every questline, every dropped sword, every level-up screen is machinery in service of that single arc.

Browser RPGs deliver it on a shorter timescale than their big cousins, and that turns out to suit the genre. You are not looking at forty hours before your build comes together. In Dragon Power you assemble a sorcerer as you go, decisions stacking into something that plays noticeably differently by the end of a run. War Lands takes the hand-drawn action-RPG route with randomised maps, so the questline bends a little each time. The wizard Elion starts from a spell gone wrong that drops an old wizard into a modern shopping mall, which is as good a reason to go on a quest as any.

Dungeon crawlers live here too. We tried running them as their own category and the feed yielded nine — enough to fill a page exactly once and nothing after that. Since a crawl is a questline pointed straight down, folding them in cost nothing. Forgotten Dungeon 2 runs the classic hack-and-slash loop where every kill is experience and every level-up is a choice between five stats. Claritas goes turn-based and strips out the story entirely, leaving party-building and skill fusion as the whole game. Dungeon Bow gives you one charged weapon and a layout that changes every descent.

What to look for, if you are choosing your first one: pay attention to how quickly the game gives you a decision that matters. The best short RPGs put a real choice in front of you early — a class, a skill, a branch — because that is what makes the character yours rather than the game's. A questline you simply walk along is a corridor with monsters in it. A questline you make choices along is a story you are in.

The other thing worth knowing is that fantasy is a convention here, not a requirement. Swords and wizards dominate because the vocabulary is shared and needs no explaining, but the underlying loop works in any setting a developer feels like building.

Bring some patience for the early levels. That is where the arc starts.
